Vitamin D helps fight asthma attacks on top of mounting evidence that show it can greatly contribute to the development of the muscles and bones.
Vitamin D helps fight asthma attacks through the immune system
An independent study conducted by Cochrane, a global organization of researchers and scientists, published a new Cochrane Review that show findings through randomized tests of evidence linking Vitamin D supplementation to reduced severe asthma attacks.
Asthma, a chronic respiratory disease, affects more than 300 million people all over the world with symptoms ranging from wheezing, coughing, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath.
Vitamin D significantly reduces severe attacks
The study’s lead author, Professor Adrian Martineau, points out that they found evidence that Vitamin D greatly reduces severe asthma attacks without resulting to side effects on health.
Martineau says that the conducted nine clinical trials of 435 children, with two studies involving some 658 adults. The test took a year to complete.
The team, however, adds that Vitamin D was not able to improve or strengthen lung function or the usual symptoms associated with asthma.
The tests on adults were for those who were diagnosed with mild or moderate asthma, while for those on children were ones diagnosed with severe asthma. The groupings were done primarily to determine which groups could benefit the most from the trials.
Do not miss out on maintenance medicines
Although the results were positive, Martineau points out that the Vitamin D was actually incorporated with the participants’ regular asthma medication and explains that people should still take their medicines prescribed for treatment.
He warns that people with asthma are strongly advised to visit their doctors as taking Vitamin D without proper medical advice may be detrimental to health.
Too little, you may end up suffering from poor bone health, taking too much and you could suffer from a condition called hypercalcemia or the toxic buildup of calcium in the blood.
Martineau advises that patients need to consult their doctors for the proper dosage of Vitamin D supplements so proper tests can be made and appropriate doses are prescribed to prevent complications.
Martineau added that tests are still ongoing for further results that may come up as an effect and may be able to have it released in the coming months.
