Truth about your fridge is that many people may not be aware of how to store food properly, which has resulted to millions of tons of food wasted every year- all because of improper refrigerator use.
Truth about your fridge is that it’s not cold enough
You may have heard lots of people saying that in order to conserve energy you need to run your refrigerator a little less colder just enough to keep your food cold enough to stay for longer periods of time.
But experts now believe that advise to be pure hogwash, as a recent study found that no less than 75 percent of British households are operating their refrigerators too warm to properly store food.
Worse, most people have poor food storage practices that could end up wasting more food and even endangering your health.
Not cold enough
A study conducted by a leading British supermarket chain points out that good waste in the UK alone is equivalent to six meals in a week or two days of complete meals from breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Lowering down the temperature in household fridges could save as much as 4.2 million tons of wasted food in a year and enough to put a student to college for a full course.
‘Keeping your fridge below four degrees centigrade, but not below zero and the freezing temperature of water, which will turn the water in foods to ice will ensure that it stays fresh longer, says food safety expert Dr. Lisa Ackerley, as she points out that bacteria tends to grow slowly in low temperatures.
She also said that having too much food in the fridge can cause it to spoil easily, as the more food you put in, the harder it gets to maintain colder temperatures inside it.
How to store food properly
Food experts and nutritionists agree that the proper use of your household refrigerators can help you avoid spoiling food, just make sure to take some time to track and stock accordingly.
There are good reasons to properly review the different compartments of your refrigerator so that you can maximize food storage.
Use the drawers or ‘crispers’ to store fruits and vegetables. Use the middle shelves for eggs, deli products and other cured meats.
Use the bottom door compartment for drinks and beverages. The upper shelf close to the freezer you can use to store leftover food and wine.
The top shelf, which is the coldest, you can use for storing raw meat, fish and poultry products.
