Best work schedule for your age, according to science, is one that should follow the structure for work and rest periods that come with aging.

Best work schedule for our age differs as you grow old

Your body’s tolerance for work and rest ten or twenty years ago is entirely different with what your body may call for now that you are older.

If you feel that you can be the same workhorse today like what you were 10 or 20 years, then you are sorely mistaken.

Balancing your work schedule depends on your brain and body

Man’s internal biological clock is responsible for controlling the every aspect of the human body from the physical to the behavioural changes that occur in the body.

This clock works on a 24-hour cycle referred to as the circadian rhythms that ultimately get to slow down as man ages.

When these changes begin to happen, so do work and rest patterns of throughout life. This greatly contributes to the vastly changing work and rest patterns of man based on their age groups.

Supported by scientific studies

There have been numerous studies that point to work-life balance and schedules, starting from adolescence and up to their late 40’s.

Schedules depending on age

Dr. Jess Shatkin, a psychiatrist from the Child Study Center at the New York University Langone Medical Center says that even when young people legally turn 18, their brain is still basking through adolescence and it does not get out of that stage until the physical age is between the mid and late 20’s.

“Adolescents have this desire to go to bed later and wake up later, and that’s what most people do until they hit around 26,” says Shatkin, as he points out that this is due to  melatonin, a hormone in the biological clock that influences the brain to start feeling sleepy at day’s end.

“Adolescents start to release melatonin later in the day than adults. They release around 10 o’clock at night, naturally, which means they then get sleepy later, and because they go to bed later, they wake up later,” Shatkin added.

The amount of melatonin released by the body decreases to about 50% at the onset of puberty. And school or work should ideally start between 9am to 10am.

To test the findings, students from a school district in Kentucky were made to come in at a later time of the day to start school and the results showed these children getting more sleep and performed better on class. The much older ones had a few more car crashes, which were believed to be because of an increase in sleep hours among teen drivers.

Those in the 30’s to 40’s range, he recommended that they move to an earlier schedule in the day. Schedules need to be more strictly followed as it could create damage when schedules are abruptly changes.

Consequently, those in their mid 40’s to 60’s, may need to have reduced work hours of not more than 25 hours per week , based on findings that they need to have reduced work hours for better efficiency and productivity.
