Drinking beer changes psychosocial attitudes based on a recent study to reveal their findings regarding behaviour of beer drinkers and how it impacts the brain.

Drinking beer changes psychosocial attitudes in the least expected ways

The findings were recently published in the journal Psychopharmacology and presented during the latest ECNP conference in Vienna, Austria.

While there are very little evidence through research about the direct link of alcohol consumption and what direct experiences are linked to it, the researchers from the University Hospital in Switzerland.

Their study focused on how alcohol affects the way people react to others and how it could have an impact on sexual arousal.

Test results

A random test of some 60 healthy test participants were broken down into two groups of men and women who belonged to the age range of 18 and 50.  Half of the test participants were given a glass of ice cold beer, while the other half were provided with non-alcoholic beer.

After the participants drank their beverages, they were then asked to perform several tasks that included an empathy assessment, facial recognition and sexual arousal tests.

The test results were that those with alcohol levels I their blood were able to detect happy faces more fast and increased longing to be with others in a seemingly joyful situation.

The test also showed that these effects were prevalent in women and was also able to allow them to ‘break free’ from their social bubble with the possibility of seeking for ‘outside’ intervention.

Different behaviour towards sex

Although it may not have increased libido, it became easier for them to view images that were sexual in nature.

One of the key chemical reactions in the body triggered by the ‘happy hormones’ known as oxytocin.

“The effect of many medications and substances of abuse have been tested on various tests of emotion processing and social cognition. However, although, many people drink beer and know its effects through personal experience there is surprisingly little scientific data on its effects on the processing of emotional social information. We found that drinking a glass of beer helps people see happy faces faster, and enhances concern for positive emotional situations. Alcohol also facilitates the viewing of sexual images, consistent with disinhibition, but it does not actually enhance sexual arousal. These effects of alcohol on social cognition likely enhance sociability,”.says lead researcher Matthias Leichti of the University Hospital in Basel.

Leichti says that he sees promise in the way their conducted the study and came up with the findings, but said that there is still a long way to go that can help people who are struggling with an alcohol habit and how they can be addressed.
