Richard Harris from NPR.org says that we all don’t have the option of selecting our parents. We can’t eliminate the genes as a factor when it comes to major diseases like cardiovascular conditions. However, we can all decide whether we want to go that route or prevent the risk from happening.
A new research finds that we can reduce our susceptibility to heart risks if we follow a healthy lifestyle. Scientists looked into it to see if that’s really the case.
DNA Is Not Destiny When It Comes To Heart Risk
The scientists then dug further into their data to look at behavior that helps the heart, as well as at the influence of obesity. Specifically, they looked at smoking habits, obesity, diet and exercise. Read more…
The study which was published in New England Journal of Medicine implies that factors concerning a change in lifestyle or habits, contribute greatly to an individual’s health risk.
The senior author of the research, Sekar Kathiresan, suggests that DNA isn’t a deciding factor. It is not destiny. When you get regular exercise, avoid smoking, and excess weight, you tend to alter your likelihood of developing such diseases.
Healthy Lifestyle Can Reduce Genetic Heart Attack Risk
Following a healthy lifestyle can cut in half the probability of a heart attack or similar events even among those at high genetic risk, say researchers. Read more…
New York Times author Gina Kolata, explains that the research by Dr. Kathiresan and his colleagues is the first attempt to use a huge amount of data for the purpose of finding the effects of genes and lifestyle towards cardiovascular conditions.
We’re familiar with the headcount – 365,000 people die of coronary heart disease in the U.S. every year. It’s one of the biggest killers worldwide. The researchers found that genes can increase the risk but it is not the determinant.
Genetic Heart Disease Risk Eased by Healthy Habits, Study Finds
A new analysis of data from more than 55,000 people provides an answer. It finds that by living right — by not smoking, by exercising moderately and by eating a healthy diet heavy in fruits, vegetables and grains — people can tamp down even the worst genetic risk. Read more…
Based on the data presented, we have the ability to change our fate. Having a history of these diseases in the family does not prove anything. You are able to make changes to your life.
