A fifty-year-old man developed hepatitis, a condition which characterized by the inflammation of the liver. This happened because of excess vitamin B3 consumption, based on the findings of researchers published in BMJ Case Reports.

He reported experiencing malaise and anorexia which then led to nausea and vomiting. He was previously healthy but because of long work hours in construction, he had to take these energy drinks. The man’s symptoms included dark urine and yellowish skin.

Man’s Energy Drink Habit Caused Hepatitis

Tests confirmed the man had jaundice and upper abdominal tenderness, as well as elevated liver enzymes, signaling liver damage. The latter symptom suggested hepatitis, and a liver biopsy confirmed this diagnosis. Read more…

Nicole Lyn Pesce shares her thoughts about the energy drink habit. It appears that the beverage increased the liver inflammation. Doctors blamed the drinks for inducing this condition. The symptoms all correlated with his energy drink habit and it all got resolved when he stopped.

This was the second reported incident that associated energy boosters with liver inflammation. A separate case, which involved a woman in her 20s, got diagnosed with acute hepatitis. She took 10 cans every day for two weeks.

Buzzkill: Energy Drinks May Cause Acute Liver Failure

This is the second reported case linking an energy drink binge with liver failure. An otherwise healthy 22-year-old woman with no history of hep C was also diagnosed with acute hepatitis in 2011. She had downed 10 cans of the stimulant a day for two weeks. Read more…

Andrew Blake from Washington Times says that the real culprit was the excess consumption of vitamin B3. The recommended intake should only be 20 mg of niacin or vitamin B3 every day. However, each drink the construction worker downed had at least 40 mg. This is quite over the top. That’s 200 percent of the recommended daily allowance.

It was already deemed as toxic – he was averaging around 160-200 mg daily. It caused a sudden health crisis within just a few weeks. Any vitamin or energy supplementation should be taken with caution. It might result to an even bigger problem if consumers aren’t aware of what they’re ingesting.

Energy Drinks Likely Caused Construction Worker’s Acute Hepatitis, Doctors Warn

Doctors advise against ingesting more than 20 mg of niacin in a single day, but each energy drink consumed by the construction worker carried 40 mg of B3, or 200 percent of the recommended daily allowance. Read more…

Drinkers should take the doctors’ advice. People should start reading the labels and looking up potential risks of any drink, supplement or food that they eat. Ingredients are quite complex these days so it pays to focus on these things.
