It may be difficult to understand what really causes sexist behavior especially among men. A new study provides hope to better understand the psyches of sexist men.
The report was published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology. The research team found that those who found themselves as playboys or see themselves as having more power than women, are more susceptible to psychological problems.
What’s even a bit more concerning is that they have a tendency of hiding the condition. They might not actively seek psychological treatment compared to others.

For the study, scientists from Indiana University Bloomington conducted a meta-analysis of 78 studies that involved 19,453 people. The study finds that toxic masculinity is the culprit. This is the idea that man’s behavior can be potentially harmful to others.
The analysis synthesized the 78 studies from 2003 and 2013. The subjects were 12- 65 years old and the majority was men. The researchers checked the 11 traditionally masculine norms and analyzed if these contributed to mental health outcomes.
Those who have a close association with any of these norms increase their risk of depression, stress, substance abuse and even negative social behaviours.

The study’s lead author says that these sexist norms aren’t just social injustice but can present an even bigger problem to your mental well-being.
Wong said that the study involved at checking the 11 norms that include playboy behavior, or sexual promiscuity, power over women self-reliance, desire to win, risk-taking and pursuit of status. These greatly reflect society’s expectations of what masculinity is all about.
