Cockroaches.. Where do we begin?

Almost everyone jumps in fear when they see a cockroach on the floor, or wall. And once it flies, even the most fearless gentleman on the planet would run. Right? Right. They are often looked at as disgusting, with no significant role in the ecosystem that they deserve to die with just one tap of your slipper.

But a very interesting article on BBC shares how cockroaches could save lives, and it’s quite surprising:

In Havana the native bright green Cuban cockroach is often kept as a pet and the insect even appears in old folktales. In one story, a beautiful young Cuban cockroach called Martina tests the character of her suitors by annoying them when they come to visit. Read more…

Interesting fact mentioned – there are 4,500 cockroach species, and only four of them are considered as pests. The rest actually has significant roles as scavengers.

The next time you plan to kill one, just remember how cockroaches could save lives in the future, especially their potential in developing the future drugs for bacteria like E. coli and MRSA.
