if you are an avid and regular user of hair dyes, you might want to consider cancelling your next hair colour session at your hair salon, as scientists have found evidence linking highly toxic compounds found in hair dyes linked to cancer.

Scientists from Green Chemicals in the United Kingdom reported to the Daily Mail warning users of hair colouring dyes in posh hair salons pose a potential high risk to health, especially with those chemical vapours from hair dyes wafting through the air.

These vapours, according to scientists, react when it comes in contact with tobacco smoke, ultraviolet radiation and other air pollutants to form into toxic compounds.

These toxic chemicals in hair dye kits are called N-nitrosamines, which have been banned from cosmetics but have been discovered to be a by-product of several active ingredients in hair dyes as a result of a chemical reaction when these vapours come in contact with other active pollutants.

Aside from N-nitrosamines, there are other substances that are still being used that may have the similar chemical effect with these toxic compounds.

Industry experts believe that many cosmetic manufacturers may be using these substances primarily due to its longer lasting characteristics compared to other known alternatives.

One case in point is the proposed use of alternative dyes derived from coffee which is far more safer, however, does not last longer compared to chemical-based hair dyes.

Scientists pointed out that this concern has been brought to the attention of the cosmetic companies, but is either being neglected or ignored.

The National Cancer Institute, on the other hand, has raised alarm bells on the possible impacts of hair dyes to cancer.

Statistics show that many people in Europe and the United States use hair dyes and more than 35% of women aged 18 and above and over 10% of men over 40 have used hair dyes.

There are a variety of hair dyes that provide different effects to hair colour, most of which cause oxidative reactions to the hair characterized by permanent colour hues being absorbed inside the hair strands.

There are over 5000 different chemicals used in the production of hair dyes and some of which have been known to contain carcinogenic properties.
