Podcast Ep 67: Nike Trainer Alex Silver-Fagan

Nike Master Trainer and strength training expert Alex Silver-Fagan is our special guest is this episode and she is on a mission to get more women to lift heavy weights (woot!). Alex, who is also the author of Get Strong for Women, turned to strength training after exploring a career in bikini competitions — an experience she found dispiriting to say the least.  In this lively discussion, Alex talks about how to advance your strength training program, the super quick (and super sweaty) HIIT workouts she turns to when she’s short on time time, and her weekly workout regimen which …

Whole30 Day 30: Instant Pot Carnitas

Nom Nom Paleo + Whole30 by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

It’s Day 30(!!!), and I saved (one of) the best recipes for last: Whole30-friendly Instant Pot Carnitas!

Whole30 Instant Pot (Pressure Cooker) Carnitas by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

Here you are, on the last day of your Whole30, so let’s take a moment to reflect on all the changes you’ve experienced this January. Remember when you first got started, a little sluggish, a little scared, and kinda-sorta unsure whether you were going to make it through all 30 days? And look at you now: You feel like a new person. You ARE a new person. You’ve mustered up an awesome amount of determination, and you followed through with something incredibly challenging. Now, you stand to reap the benefits!

Whole30 Instant Pot (Pressure Cooker) Carnitas by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

When you were in the thick of it all, it might have been tough to remember why you put yourself through a Whole30 in the first place. Remember: the Whole30 is designed to help you understand how different foods affect you. By cutting out foods that are commonly problematic for 30 days, you’ve managed to re-set your baseline, and banish your bad food habits. Your sugar cravings are gone, you’re sleeping better, and you’ve boosted your metabolism, digestion, and overall health. So a loud and hearty cheer of congratulations is in order—BUT YOU’RE NOT QUITE DONE YET!

I’ll get to what you have to do next, but first, you gotta celebrate. That’s where my Instant Pot Carnitas comes in. I’ve perfected a Whole30-friendly version of this Mexican classic that uses an Instant Pot to make cooking a breeze. Plus, the results can go toe-to-porky-toe with the carnitas at your favorite taqueria!

Whole30 Instant Pot (Pressure Cooker) Carnitas by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

This Instant Pot Carnitas is the perfect End-Of-Your-Whole30 Party dish. Bring out a big platter of these citrus-kissed carnitas at your next Whole30 shindig, and you’ll be the most popular person in attendance—even though you’ve avoided going out to eat with your pals the entire month of January, and everyone (who hasn’t done a Whole30 with you) thinks you’re either an anti-social shut-in or a weird health nut.

Seriously: THIS’LL SHOW ’EM! Get the recipe here!

Whole30 Instant Pot (Pressure Cooker) Carnitas by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

But remember the part where I said you’re not quite done yet? Well, here’s the thing: You did a Whole30 to see how certain foods affect you, right? So you’re not going to want to throw away all the hard work you did this month by suddenly throwing yourself into a frenzied free-for-all at a Vegas buffet. If you immediately start eating grains, dairy, alcohol, and all the stuff you’ve been carefully avoiding for the past 30 days, you’ll have wasted the precious opportunity to re-introduce those foods one by one, so you’ll really understand how each of them impacts the way you feel.

So at your End-of-Whole30 party, give yourself a high-five, and maybe start with your first re-introduction food group. Pick one, and keep tabs on how you feel. Not sure how to do this? Check out the Whole30’s 10-day re-introduction plan here!

Better yet, buy or borrow a copy of Melissa Hartwig’s Food Freedom Forever to learn how to navigate your eating life after a Whole30!

We’ll be posting a January Whole30 wrap-up soon! Stay tuned, Nomsters!

5 Awesome Running Sports Bras for Larger Cup Sizes

As an ultramarathoner who is also an F cup, I can tell you that finding the right sports bra is mission critical … but it often feels more like mission impossible. There was a day not all that long ago when women with larger cup sizes — like myself — really had no other option than to wear two (or more) sports bras layered on top of each other or, worse yet, had to skip the high impact activities altogether. Sad but true. The good news is that times they are a changing. It’s getting easier to find sports bras …

Whole30 Day 29: Whole Roasted Cauliflower

Nom Nom Paleo + Whole30 by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

Whole30 Day 29: Whole Roasted Cauliflower by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

What should you cook on the penultimate day of your Whole30? Whole Roasted Cauliflower!

There’s nothing like a beautifully golden-crusted whole roasted cauliflower, people. Tender and almost meaty in texture, this cauliflower isn’t just visually enticing—it’s out-of-this-world delicious. Best of all, it’s cheap, easy to make, and satisfies folks of all dietary stripes—Whole30ers, Paleo peeps, omnivores, vegans, and even my picky kids!

Whole30 Day 29: Whole Roasted Cauliflower by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

By seasoning a whole roasted cauliflower head with just salt and olive oil, you’ll have yourself a blank slate that can be paired with your favorite sauces and herbs. I have a bunch of sauces in my Recipe Index you can choose from, like Arugula Pesto, Leon’s Caper and Anchovy Miracle Sauce, and Tonnato Sauce.

Or even better: Try drizzling a whole roasted cauliflower with the Hazelnut Garlic Sauce from my latest cookbook, Ready or Not! 150+ Make-Ahead, Make-Over, and Make-Now Recipes by Nom Nom Paleo! The warm, nutty flavors are a perfect complement to this incredible vegetable side dish.

Don’t you just want to stuff this in your mouth? ’Cause I sure do.

Whole30 Day 28: Sausage Egg “McMuffin”

Nom Nom Paleo + Whole30 by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

Whole30 Day 28: Sausage Egg McMuffin by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

It’s Day 28, and you’re this close to the end of your Whole30—you’ve put in four solid weeks of hard work!—so now’s definitely not the time to blow it by caving to your fast food cravings. When you feel the itch to head to the drive-thru for a breakfast sandwich this morning, make my Paleo and Whole30 Sausage Egg “McMuffin” instead!

Whole30 Day 28: Sausage Egg McMuffin by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

Yes, those are eggs that I’m holding in my hands—not English muffins. And no, substituting good ol’ eggs for bread isn’t SWYPO. Remember what the Whole30 said? “If you’re subbing something unhealthy with vegetables or high-quality meat, that’s almost certainly a thumbs-up.” (For my purposes, eggs count as meat!)

This recipe does call for some special equipment—namely, two stainless steel 3½-inch biscuit cutters. (Mason jar lid bands work, too.) But trust me—it’s worth buying these cheap doodads to make these handsome, hold-in-your-hand breakfast sammies, especially if it keeps you from stuffing your face with bags of fast food!

Go get the step-by-step recipe for Whole30-friendly Sausage Egg “McMuffin” here!

A free 7-day flexible meal plan including breakfast, lunch and dinner and a shopping list. All recipes include calories and Weight Watchers Freestyle Smart Points.

Skinnytaste Meal Plan (January 29-February 4)

Hope everyone is enjoying these meal plans! I’ve been incorporating more meal prep dishes into the meal plan, meals you can make on the weekend so they are ready for the week. If you’re new to my meal plans, I’ve been sharing free, 7-day flexible meal plans (you can see my previous meal plans here) that are meant as a guide, with plenty of wiggle room for you to add more food, coffee, beverages, fruits, snacks, dessert, wine, etc. You should aim for around 1500 calories* a day.

There’s also a precise, organized grocery list that will make grocery shopping so much easier and much less stressful. Save you money and time. You’ll dine out less often, waste less food and you’ll have everything you need on hand to help keep you on track.

Lastly, if you’re on Facebook join my Skinnytaste Facebook Community where everyone’s sharing photos of recipes they are making, you can join here. I’m loving all the ideas everyone’s sharing!

THE DETAILS:

Breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday, are designed to serve 1 while dinners and all meals on Saturday and Sunday are designed to serve a family of 4. Some recipes make enough leftovers for two nights or lunch the next day. While we truly believe there is no one size fits all meal plan, we did our best to come up with something that appeals to a wide range of individuals. Everything is Weight Watchers friendly, I included the updated Weight Watcher Freestyle Points for your convenience, feel free to swap out any recipes you wish or just use this for inspiration!

The grocery list is comprehensive and includes everything you need to make all meals on the plan. I’ve even included brand recommendations of products I love and use often. Cross check your cabinets because many condiments you’ll notice I use often, so you may already have a lot of them.

And last, but certainly not least, this meal plan is flexible and realistic. There’s plenty of wiggle room for cocktails, healthy snacks, dessert and dinner out. And if necessary, you can move some things around to make it work with your schedule. Please let me know if you’re using these plans, this will help me decide if I should continue sharing them!

The Best Dumbbell Exercises for Your Glutes

NEEDS A HEADER VIDEO LINK INCLUDED BELOW My friend, and fellow CrossFitter, Sam recently went on a work trip that involved a hotel stay. When she arrived, she posted on her Instagram Story a sweeping view of the hotel gym she had to work with for the length of her stay. Needless to say, it wasn’t her usual set-up … essentially, her options were a few pieces of cardio equipment and some dumbbells. For those of us who are used to the convenience of having a full gym nearby that provides all the fitness (kettle)bells and whistles, this sort of …

To see if — after reading this interesting article on Women’s Health — my hormones and my cycle played a role. via GIPHY Because that bad-workout-for-no-reason thing is not fun. And if there’s …

Whole30 Day 25: Parchment Packets!

Nom Nom Paleo + Whole30 by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com

Okay—now that we’ve been practicing cooking all month long, let’s put our skills to the test with these Whole30 parchment packets!

Whole30 Parchment Packets by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

By now, your old (bad) food cravings are probably in the rear-view mirror, but you may still have some friends and family who are intentionally or unintentionally sabotaging you by eating or dangling unhealthy food choices in front of you. You can always just turn away…or better yet, teach ’em what a better alternative looks like. Case in point: If someone’s yammering on and on about the awesomeness of Hot Pockets, show off your ability to quickly whip up these Whole30-friendly parchment packets!

You remember the Paper-Wrapped Chicken we made earlier this month, right? We did some fancy origami work to fold up some fresh veggies and protein inside a heart made of parchment, and then baked it up.

Well, the same concept applies to all sorts of parchment packet suppers. I know you’ve been practicing folding up and cooking your food in parchment, right? Well, now it’s time to try making these delicious Whole30 packets, too!

One key to great cooking is learning how to improvise in the kitchen. (And when you do, don’t forget to tell me about ’em!)

Whole30 Day 23: Char Siu and Hiyashi Chūka

Whole30 Char Siu Hiyashi ChūkaNom Nom Paleo + Whole30 by Michelle Tam https://nomnompaleo.com Whole30 Day 23: Char Siu and Hiyashi Chūka by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

Looks tempting, huh? Yes, I have a Whole30-friendly Char Siu recipe and you can use it to make Hiyashi Chuka (a.k.a. cold “ramen” salad)!

Asian food is my lifeblood, but as I’m sure you know, it ain’t easy finding Whole30-compliant dishes from the land of my peoples. It’s not that the cuisines of Asia aren’t rooted in real, whole foods. But especially over the past few generations, industrialized food production—which has helped feed billions—has also led manufacturers down the path to using hyper-processed ingredients that are adulterated with all sorts of badness.

Need an example? Behold: Fried Gluten with Peanuts (“Also for Vegetarians!”):

Whole30 Day 23: Char Siu and Hiyashi Chūka by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

Pretty sure this isn’t Whole30-compliant.

Years ago, I resigned myself to the fact that there were some Asian dishes (and many family recipes) that I’d never be able to make Paleo, let alone Whole30-friendly. Many of these dishes required non-compliant ingredients like wheat, soy, sugar, and terrible oils and fillers. For instance, many soy sauce brands contain gluten, and store-bought hoisin sauce contains gluten, sugar, and other chemical weirdness. But I’ve never stopped trying to make Paleo and Whole30-friendly versions of the Asian dishes from my childhood that I especially loved.

If you’re like me, you don’t want to set aside Asian food entirely just because you’re doing a Whole30, right? Lucky for you, I have lots of Asian favorites in my free Recipe Index, including:

Whole30 Day 23: Char Siu and Hiyashi Chūka by Michelle Tam / Nom Nom Paleo https://nomnompaleo.com

But there are two Whole30-friendly recipes in particular I want to share with you today: Paleo Char Siu (a.k.a. Chinese BBQ pork) and Paleo Hiyashi Chūka (Cold “Ramen” Salad). Why? Because once you make the former, the latter is easy to throw together later, making these dishes a perfect one-two punch during the week. So who’s ready for some Whole30 Char Siu Hiyashi Chūka?

PALEO CHAR SIU (CHINESE BBQ PORK)

My Paleo Char Siu is my version of Cantonese roasted pork—the bright red hunks of meat hanging in the display windows of Chinatown BBQ joints. Trust me when I tell you that this stuff tastes just as good—if not bettter—than the real deal.

PALEO HIYASHI CHŪKA (COLD “RAMEN” SALAD)

Once you have some Paleo Char Siu at the ready, you can easily whip up some Paleo Hiyashi Chūka! This is a bright and refreshing Japanese cold “ramen” salad served with a variety of toppings and seasoned with a sweet, chilled sauce. This version is entirely Paleo and Whole30-friendly, so check it out!
