Researchers may now have an ally in the quest of finding the cure for cancer from the most unlikely subjects – live bacteria that thrive inside the human body.

The University of Chicago recently made a startling discovery with the cancer-killing potential of a bacteria called Bifidobacterium- a living microorganism  that resides in the gastrointestinal tract.

Daniel Chen, head of the cancer immunotherapy research for Roche Holding AG, said that they were able to test mice in immonutherapy evaluations for skin cancer and discovered that the bacteria was responsible for controlling the growth of the cancer cells.

Aside from gut bacteria amplifying cancer treatments, other living microorganisms inside the human body may also hold the promise of curbing other types of diseases as well.

Another separate study conducted in France also showed similar anti-cancer effects on laboratory tests using the same microorganisms.

These recent findings have began to spark interest among drug manufacturers on the high potential of utilizing these bioavailable microorganisms in the human body in the treatment of common diseases and someday might provide the cure for most of the world’s debilitating and deadly diseases.

Dubbed by scientists as the human microbiome- these make up the trillions of viruses, fungi, good and bad bacteria that co exist  inside human bodies, many of which also play crucial roles like stomach bacteria that help breakdown food in the stomach, assists in cleaning the gastrointestinal walls and even bacteria found in our saliva that also help break down as we ingest it.

Many pharmaceutical companies are already starting to pour in funds for researching on the treatment and therapeutical potential of these human microbiomes in the treatment of diseases and disorders, but scientists are hopeful they might be able to develop good and helpful findings in the near future.

Millions of people die all over the world due to cancer and although there have been significant strides in the development of medicine to provide intervention treatment for cancer patients, many still are affected due to a diverse variety of cancers that affect many of the human organs.

The most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide is prostate cancer, followed by colorectal cancer then breast cancer.
