Negative thoughts rank among the list of factors that affect sleep not limited to insomnia, but getting disrupted in the middle of a deep sleep and affect your sleeping pattern.
Negative thoughts due to life experiences
Aside from anxiety and depression, the human brain is equipped to register even the simplest episode or experience to memory. Rational thinking and logic may often find a way to develop an experience into a negative thought and make its way into the subconscious realm of the brain.
Experts believe that since sleep is an important need of the body, it has to play its role to enable the body to maximize its full potential – this includes the problem of insomnia and inadequate deep sleep.
A negative outlook or experience
But sleep is not only affected by a person’s disability to have it for nights on end, but it also has something to do with the lack of it- both in time and quality.
Inadequate sleep characterized by a disruption and wakes you up is called repeated negative thoughts (RNT). This results to either the lack of quality of sleep or the delayed ability to fall asleep.
RNT is associated with distressing thoughts or unwanted perceptions that gets repeated time and again in your mind that is most linked to any negative occurrence or perception that you experienced.
This may not be anxiety or depression, but more of a sudden mental recall that makes you think about it and one that affects you, sometimes to the point of affecting your judgment or mood.
Treatment for insomnia
Only recently, the American College of Physicians that it stated to endorse a sleep therapy called the cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia or CBTI.
Millions of Americans suffer from insomnia and researchers believe that this could help treat the condition.
Experts believe that the CBTI program, which is technically a sleep therapy program that runs for six to eight weeks, to help participants cope with the mental and conditional factors that affect sleep quality.
The core concept of CBTI is all about cognitive restructuring that is focused towards reframing or challenging the negative manner of thinking that affects how one perceives well-being or quality of life.
It also provides a customized sleeping plan and helps develop a sleep routine and the CBTI aims to allow participants to focus on those programs and apply behavioural aspects that allow people to rest in the proper state of mind.
