Genes responsible for depression were identified by scientists and could be declared a modern breakthrough in the study of clinical depression and in the search for treatment or therapy of this mental illness.
Genes responsible for depression found
Researchers from Pfizer pharmaceuticals found 17 specific gene types from the genomes of no less than 450,000 people, who showed a high risk of developing depression and how the genes may be responsible for it.
The study examined data consolidated by a consumer genetic testing company and out of 300,000 participants, there were 75,607 persons who reported having been treated for clinical depression.
Their DNA was then collected and compared to their healthy counterparts using a programmed algorithm to filter the search data, which then accurately pointed out the genetic variations and differences that appeared among those who were suffering from depression.
Depression is a disease
Study lead author Roy Perlis clarified that although the genes do not signify a direct link that would cause depression, but it does provide compelling evidence for researchers to understand better how depression occurs. Perlis believes that depression is a disease rather than just a mood or behavioural condition.
“Depression is about biology and I think that will be helpful for some people in reducing stigma and changing how we think about depression,” says Perlis.
More in-depth study needed
Although some experts agree that the number of subjects involved in the study were fairly significant to come up with conclusive data, they believe that more in-depth study is required to validate these findings.
They also expressed apprehension over the data gathered from a consumer-based testing company where the data are mostly self-reported and may not be specifically guided by specialists in providing their answers to questions.
Another basis is that some people with severe depression may not have received a proper diagnosis and may base their premise on common beliefs.
Depression and anxiety affects millions in US
The National Institute of Mental Health reports that an estimated 40 million adults in the United States are affected by depression and anxiety disorders especially those from the age bracket of 18 and older. Anxiety and depression are also the most common mental illness in the US.
Although depression and anxiety disorders are different from the other, people suffering from depression experience symptoms similar with those having anxiety disorders namely, irritability, nervousness, insomnia and lack of focus.
The difference between the two are primarily behavioural and emotional symptoms.
