Our gastrointestinal tract – commonly known as the gut – is figuratively known as our second brain and is responsible for transferring food to our digestion organs that is crucial in digesting the food we eat and where we get our sustenance and nutrients in order for our bodies to function properly.

All the food that we eat goes through the gut and science has now established that gut health is as important as maintaining the right aggregate of microorganisms called the human microbiome, which is the counterpart of the human genome.

The human microbiome– these make up the trillions of viruses, fungi, good and bad bacteria that co exist inside human bodies, many of which also play crucial roles like stomach bacteria that help breakdown food in the stomach, assists in cleaning the gastrointestinal walls and even bacteria found in our saliva that also help break down as we ingest it.

But in order to stay healthy and fit, we also need to provide a healthy gut environment for the microbiome to effectively do its job in supporting our bodies to help us stay in tip top shape.

It is a fact that our body can eat anything edible and can be shoved down the gut, unfortunately, not everything that we take in can be healthy and here are some factors that are unhealthy for the gut.

Poor diet. Microbiomes thrive on food that we get our nutrients and minerals from and results in giving us the right absorption of nutrition for the bodies, however, foods rich on sugar or those we could not get any sort of nutrition from can be harmful.

Lay aside all processed foods, eat an alkalinized diet full of greens, limit sugar, chew your food properly and thoroughly to hasten and improve digestion.

Limit antibiotics and chemical-based medications. They kill bacteria that include the good ones that help the body. If you are taking medication for an illness, make sure to also supplement this with a good diet so your body could heal fast and lets your body fight diseases faster and better.

Alcohol. It kills off good bacteria in the gut and increases acidity, thus, creating an environment that is not suitable for growth of good bacteria.

Finally, stress. It helps drive the blood away from the digestive track, preventing blood from delivering the nutrients the digestive system needs to function accordingly.

So take good care of your gut. It’s as good as any part of your body that you want protected.
