Learning ways to clean up your diet can prove scary when you first think about it. However, this does not need to be the case. Just choose and stick with a few fundamentals, and then follow up with a few nifty ingredient substitutions, and you can better the health of both you and the planet Earth around you.

Focus On Whole Foods

If you are confused as to what a whole food is, just know that it is a food consumed in a state very close to its original form. Vegetables and fruits are whole foods, as are nuts, seeds and greens.

Items in grocery stores that have a lot of packaging are less whole. You are most likely to find whole foods around the perimeter of your grocery store, where you find produce, meat, milk and the like. Even better, shop for food at the local farmers market.

Start Skipping Processed Items

We all have natural cravings for things of certain flavours or tastes and textures. These include sweet, salty, smooth and crunchy. Food companies have put a lot of time and trouble into creating processed food products that wind up triggering our known flavour receptors. These products are often tasty and cheap, but your real expense is your physical health. Study nutrition labels to identify processed foods. If there’s any ingredient you can’t personally pronounce, it shouldn’t go in your mouth.

Avoid Artificial Ingredients

As you learn ways to clean up your diet, you’ll discover that artificial ingredients are practically everywhere. The FDA says that most of them are safe, but they can still impact a human’s health quite a bit. Sugar substitutes abound, ranging from aspartame to high fructose corn syrup, and you’ll find them in everything from your favourite brand of soda to all sorts of condiments. It’s never healthy to eat a ton of sweets, but artificial ones are especially bad. The food industry loves MSG because it enhances the flavour of processed meats, most canned goods and Chinese dishes. Your doctor doesn’t love MSG because it can cause nausea and chest pains. Keep in mind too that fats can be good and bad. The ones in avocados are great to take into your body, but trans fats are not, and possibly the worst of the worst. Again, read labels, and don’t buy anything with hydrogenated vegetable oil (full or partial) or shortening.

Substitute Ingredients

One of the best ways to clean up your diet is to keep eating the foods and dishes you crave and love, but just make them a little healthier by substituting certain ingredients. Consider pulses, which include dry peas, chickpeas, beans and lentils. They are high in protein, iron, fibre and antioxidants, but they are also gluten-free, naturally. They make a great ingredient substitute. Add some protein but drop some fat on your next sandwich by using chickpea hummus instead of mayo. Use lentils of beans for additional fibre without sacrificing protein the next time you flip burgers. Pea protein is more environmentally sustainable than whey protein, so use it for energy-boosting smoothies. Use white bean puree instead of butter in most dishes!
