NPR talks about “nudging” as a new method to attract consumers to choose healthy options. We’re all familiar with the neatly stacked soda and the tortilla plus chips display in supermarkets.

This is a sales tactic which tends to make goods look interesting to people and it’s easy to reach. Because of the presentation, people feel encouraged to buy these things. We know that this tactic is so effective – there are a lot of food banks around the country that use this strategy.

Nudges mean making small changes to the environment at home. It can take the form of a simple redesign in your kitchen or neatly stacking cabbages in an attractive container. Studies have shown that this method greatly improved healthy consumption.

Nudging Nutritious Foods to Help Alleviate Summer Hunger

To help alleviate summer hunger, food pantries throughout the nation are implementing a variety of strategies to encourage the families they serve to select the nutritious foods they need to lead active, healthy lives. One approach to encouraging healthy foods choices is known as a “nudge,” which may not be so obvious or what you expect. Read more…

No matter what season it is, it’s important that we encourage our family and kids to take the first step when it comes to nutrition. A healthy habit goes a long way.
