Negative impact of job dissatisfaction can have long-term effects to your health and well-being when you reach the prime years, so it would matter much to have a fulfilling career while you are still young.

Negative impact of job dissatisfaction does not end when you leave work.

Based on a study from 2014, more than half of Americans claim they are unhappy with their jobs and surprisingly, fewer of them even suspect that there are bound to be a high risk of diseases.

Separately, the Ohio State University spearheaded a study regarding the impacts of job satisfaction in careers for different age groups.

Professor Jonathan Dirlam, together with associate professor Hui Zheng, studied data from polls conducted on 6,432 Americans where the respondents answered test questionnaires involving job satisfaction.

The study covered the period from 1979 onwards as part of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979. The respondents who participated were of the age range of 14 to 22 years and were monitored regularly to include milestones and career pathing, among others.

Survey details

The respondents were made to rate their individual job satisfaction levels from 1 to 4, with the lowest rating for ‘dislike very much’ and highest is ‘like very much.’ After which the results were categorized into four groups.

No less than 45% of the respondents consistently rated low job satisfaction levels with only 15% noting consistent high job satisfaction scores. Around 23% started from a high level which trended down over the years and only 17% who started with low ratings but trended higher.

Mental health

Among the consistent complaints raised by those with low satisfaction scores included depression, anxiety, insomnia and had low mental health indicators.

Those who started high and trended down were the one who were most likely to develop conditions like trouble sleeping, anxiety and low mental health. Worse, they did show signs of developing emotional problems, including depression.

Those who started with low satisfaction but trended upward did not show signs of additional health problems.

“The higher levels of mental health problems for those with low job satisfaction may be a precursor to future physical problems. Increased anxiety and depression could lead to cardiovascular or other health problems that won’t show up until they are older,” says Hui Zheng.

Positive outlook

The researchers, however, found no adverse effects on health for those who started low but trended upward and even showed signs of improvement in their state of health and overall well being.

Among the reasons stated by this group defining job satisfaction factors ranging from security o tenure, better pay, workplace atmosphere, career growth and employee-centric policies.
