CTV News reports about the findings of the study and they discovered that there’s a connection with the amount of sleep and car accidents.
According to the results from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study, if a person gets less than seven hours sleep in a day, it nearly doubles the risk.

CBS News says that this is a negative effect of sleep deprivation. Drivers who get one or two hours less than the recommended amount are greatly at risk.
Those who miss 2-3 hours in a 24-hour period quadrupled their risk. It’s the same crash risk as drunk driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The report is based on the analysis of a representative sample from the NHTSA’s National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey of 7,234 drivers involved in 4,571 crashes. WebMD says that this is the first ever study that quantified the relationship between lack of sleep and car crash. The study’s author, Brian Tefft, adds that sleep-impaired driving has not been given the utmost attention.
Bryan Thomas, the federal agency’s communications director, said that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) considers this as a problem. They’ll soon come up with a national plan to correct this issue.
