Why stress erases benefits of good fats may be largely due to the body’s response that affects proper metabolism, as well as may be the reason why stress eating could also become a problem.

Why stress erases benefits of good fats seems like a biological response

In a recent study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, researchers from the Ohio State University in Columbus reveal the first study to delve into the effects of stress in affecting healthy eating habits.

Study author Jan Kiecolt- Glaser, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at Ohio State, points out that stress can indeed have adverse effects on eating healthy fats, like Omega 3 fatty acids and many nut varieties.

Although Glaser and her team were aware about the effects of poor diet and stress can exacerbate inflammation linked to diabetes, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis, they wanted to further delve into stress and explore the possibility of measuring it in the bloodstream.

Meal tests

The study was conducted by the team with some 60 female participants with 38 of them having survived breast cancer and were at an average age level of 53 years.

They were asked to randomly eat any one of two breakfast choices provided for them, one was of biscuits and gravy with eggs and the other one was turkey sausage made with saturated fat from palm oil or a similar breakfast with the same nutritional values made with monounsaturated sunflower oil.

Out of all the participants, 31 of them came out with stress factors regardless of the nature or severity .

When blood samples were taken, the research team focused their attention on two primary indictors of inflammation – C-reactive proteins and serum amyloid A.

The results showed that those who ate food with saturated fat had higher levels of of all the markers identified and compared to those who had their meals made with sunflower oils.

“These data show how recent stressors and a [major depressive disorder]history can reverberate through metabolic alterations, promoting inflammatory and atherogenic responses,” says Glaser.

They did that unless stress is reduced and minimized, it will continue to affect health based on the hard evidences that show its effects on the body.

Workplace stress is included

Studies show that there are indeed a lot of health-related concerns that are associated with workplace stress resulting to high employee turnover, absenteeism, low productivity, low morale and low motivation, among others.

Wellness and preventive medicine can help reduce healthcare costs

“Health care costs to a company are now a major issue, whereas it used to be an afterthought,” says Dr. Tim Church, a preventive medicine specialist and chief medical officer for ACAP Health Consulting. “As health care costs continue to skyrocket, it’s the American employers who are taking the brunt of these costs.”

Work-related stress, according to an extensive study by the University of Cambridge points out it can largely impact physical, emotional, intellectual and behavioural issues among people.

These conditions include sleep problems, headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, erectile dysfunction and a whole lot of other medical conditions.
