Why men sleep better does in fact have something to do with their biological profile, which is similar to how you can tell the difference between men and women.

Why men sleep better is not unfair

Make no mistake, it is not men’s fault why they sleep better than women, but more because of the fact that women go through a rhythm cycle that prepares them for sleep at a later stage and is the likely cause for their sleeping problems.

This was the result of the collaborative study conducted by researchers from the McGill University’s Department of Psychiatry and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute in Montreal, Canada.

The sleep and wake cycles

The researchers were hoping to compare the effects of the body clock in relation to sleep and alertness between men and women. Their study focused on the ultradian sleep-wake cycle (USW) which refers to a cycle that lasts for less than 24 hours.

The USW cycle is the opposite of the circadian rhythm which lasts for 24 hours. The USW also affects the heartbeat, breathing, body temperature and sleep patterns.

The research team, led by Dr, Diane Boivin, looked at the sleep and wake patterns of test participants.

For the women participants, the researchers analyzed the two phases of the menstrual cycle as well as conditions that may affect it like the use of hormonal contraceptives and other lifestyle factors.

The experiments were conducted over 36 cycles, with 60-minute wake episodes alternated with 60-minute nap periods. They also measured the core body temperature, salivary melatonin, sleep and alertness.

“For a similar sleep schedule, we find that women’s body clock causes them to fall asleep and wake up earlier than men. The reason is simple: Their body clock is shifted to a more easterly time zone. This observed difference between the sexes is essential for understanding why women are more prone to disturbed sleep than men,” says Boivin.

Their study confirms another study that also delved into sleeping patterns of men and women in relation to mental functioning and as Boivin points out that their study can help others to look for ways to alleviate such problems.

Insomnia has been found twice as likely to occur with women than in men.

The Center for Disease Control reports that poor sleep has been linked to several health issues like heart disease, diabetes, depression, obesity and mental problems.
