Battling cancer with exercise may seem like a far-fetched idea, but a recent study has shown that it all begins with fat cells from obese or overweight people.
Battling cancer with exercise can help kill cancer cells.
This is based on a new study by a Canadian group from York University where they found out that cancer cells feed on fat cells as if it is the fuel that keeps it going.
“What we found recently is that these same hormones also affect cell growth and the fat cell in a lean person is different than in a fat cell in an obese person. It produced a different pattern of hormones,” says study lead Michael Connor, an associate professor from the faculty of health at York.
Fat cells, known as adipose tissues, that are found in obese people may seem to promote cancer growth, especially breast cancer. Their study also claims that leaner individuals have a different set of hormone patterns that inhibit cancer cell growth.
Fitter and healthier is better
There’s no other way to keep the volume of fat cells in the body at bay than to engage in exercise, followed by proper diet and nutrition for the body. Connor said that likelihood of an obese person lowering the risk of cancer or other forms of lifestyle diseases can only be through making sure that the body stays fit and healthy.
Another added benefit to this is that it can also help strengthen the body and to avoid the risk of coronary heart disease and diabetes.
“Both of those things can modify how a fat cell behaves so you don’t necessarily need the weight loss, what we really need to do is change the behaviour of the fat. We get so caught up on weight loss and losing weight, it may not be that that is our end goal,” Connor added.
Being inactive increases cancer risk
In a separate study published in Cancer Research UK, researchers identified that low levels of physical activity increases the risk of cancer. The study found that an estimated 1 percent of cancer incidents in the United Kingdom, which was around 3400 cases each year, were linked to reduced physical activity. The researchers measured the activity levels based on government guidelines regarding public health which calls for regular exercise activities.
