The United Kingdom is currently developing a new vaccine that destroys cancerous tumours and researchers hope would be able to prevent cancer from metastasizing early on.
Two patients have already been injected with this vaccine at the Guy’s Hospital in London, with 30 more expected to take it as part of an ongoing clinical trial that will last in the next two years.
This revolutionary vaccine is targeted on reinforcing the body’s immune system to zero in on cancer cells, thus leveraging on the body’s own disease fighting capability to prevent the development of tumours and eventually eliminate cancer from the equation.
Researchers, in order to provide a jumpstart, combined the vaccination with small test doses of chemotherapy, to kill several tumour cells and engage the immune system to kill the tumour.
An enzyme called the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) helps the body regulate gene production and coupled with the immune system to provide hope and possibly pave the way to completely cure any type of cancer.
The National Cancer Institute reported that by the end of 2016, there will be an expected 1.7 million people in the United States who will be diagnosed for cancer and .6 million of them are expected to die due to cancer.
The most common cancers are pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, leukemia, thyroid cancer, melanoma of the skin, bladder cancer, breast cancer, lung and bronchus cancer.
Cancer does not choose who it will victimize and it does not care whether you are old or young, citing from reports back in 2014, there were an estimated 15,780 children and adolescents from 1 to 19 years old who were diagnosed with cancer.
The American Cancer Society said that people need to be aware about the signs and symptoms related to cancer and although each type of cancer has different modalities, knowing the basics are important so that you could immediately consult a physician and have some tests conducted.
Detection at an early stage can help prevent cancer cells from further developing due to medical intervention.
Signs and symptoms to look out for;
- Change in bladder or bowel habits
- Skin sores that do not heal
- White spots or patches in the mouth and tongue
- Blood discharges
- Indigestion or problem swallowing
- Thickening or appearance of lumps in some areas in the body, particularly the breast
These symptoms do not necessarily mean they are the effects of cancer, but could help serve as a warning for possible early detection and eventually in the near future we may be able to have the vaccine that destroys cancerous tumours and be able to lose our fear of the big C.
