According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.9 billion people aged 18 and older were overweight in the year 2014 alone, and over 600 million of them were obese. This was twice the number of cases back in the 1980s.

One major culprit is the boom of various fast and processed foods. These foods contain a lot of harmful additives, such as added salt, fats and flavors, that undoubtedly contribute to weight gain.

If minimizing portion sizes could beat obesity, how sure are we that people won’t order double? After all, pizza will always be pizza, right? There are people who are willing to spend a lot just to eat that little piece of heaven.

But there’s always a hope. Obesity is highly preventable, anyway.

You may want to opt for healthier foods like fruits and vegetables. Exercising or increasing your daily activities for at least an hour will help fight off unwanted weight gain. And of course, tobacco and alcohol consumption must be reduced.

Since anyone is at risk, it’s better for parents to feed their kids with healthier products. In 2013, there are about 42 million children aged 5 and below who are either overweight or obese. So always encourage them to eat their greens!

Obesity can result to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and some types of cancers. Don’t wait until you’re suffering from these chronic diseases before you change your lifestyle.
