While the discovery of antibiotics paved the way for a better world in the treatment of many diseases today’s man-made technological and ingenious practices are what causes antibiotic resistance to rear its ugly head.
Human abuse and negligence are what causes antibiotic resistance
The recent emergence of superbugs – a monicker for mutated bacteria strains that developed resistance to antibiotics – is proof of what is currently happening in the medical and pharmaceutical world, for which the main reasons point strongly on human intervention as the primary cause.
As of the current time, most infections are still treated with what could be the last line of antibiotic formula known as colistins, however, reports show that there are already instances of colistin resistance in certain diseases in the United States and China.
There are several reasons how superbugs developed and those that top the list are the wanton use of over-the-counter antibiotics used by many to treat diseases without prescriptions from physicians, farmers using antibiotics for livestock and an open market where one can easily get antibiotics and popping it like candy in their mouths.
Global campaign on antibiotic awareness
Several countries are already taking measures to campaign for awareness on the use and dangers of antibiotics, but experts argue that this is not enough and more focus should also be aimed at researching and discovering new antibiotic treatments to help avert a likely crisis.
This crisis would let us look back almost a century back before antibiotics was discovered and infections was the predominant cause of deaths. The golden era of antibiotics began and contributed to millions of lives saved throughout the years, but has somehow evolved and some diseases today have become more virulent, primarily due to overuse of antibiotics that developed these diseases to become resistant to antibiotic intervention.
Unless scientific measures are taken to immediately treat and fight off diseases through new or improved antibiotic drugs, diseases like tuberculosis or pneumonia could once again rise up from the ashes and emerge stronger and drug-resistant.
We still see a ray of hope with the current campaigns to find new antibiotics and help educate the public about the dangers of antibiotics abuse, with a promise that we might be able to win the battle against what causes antibiotic resistance.
