While it’s a no-brainer that alcohol has its harmful effects to the body, pregnant women are still unstoppable. In fact, 1 out of 10 still have their occasional drink, and majority of them are aged 35 to 44.
Having a glass of wine while pregnant, or other alcoholic drinks for that matter, are the leading preventable cause of “birth defects and intellectual and neurodevelopmental disabilities,” or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), according to a recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Another report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 2 to 5 per 100 school children have FASD in the US and other Western European countries alone.
Just think of this: is having a glass of wine while pregnant worth it, if you know it will potentially damage your child? It also increases your risk of miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight.
The best thing to do is to avoid alcohol altogether. It’s the safest way. Although early intervention treatment services can possibly help a child’s development, FASD lasts a lifetime, so just forget about alcohol if you’re planning to conceive, pregnant, or even breastfeeding.
