Have you heard about the power of beetroot? In fact, beets are causing quite a buzz in the sports nutrition world today. This is because of their mega health benefits and performance-enhancing potential. It helps lower blood pressure and fight certain types of cancers. This article provides information on the power of beetroot and its overall health and workout benefits.
How Beetroot Works
Beets and beetroots contain nitrates. Although nitrates have been receiving bad press for being used as a preservative in lunchmeat and hot dogs, when it organically appear in vegetables, it becomes a powerful ingredient. Nitrates dilate blood vessels which allow the blood to flow easily to and from the heart. This process helps lower your blood pressure. The power of beetroot doesn’t end there. Recently, they have shown to promote NO or nitric oxide which is a magic ingredient for its performance boosting abilities.
You may have already heard that some of the pre-workout supplements contain NO to help you with increased endurance, faster recovery times, and increased energy levels. It continues to burn calories and build muscle even after the workout is over. Beetroot might be Mother Nature’s way of helping you achieve all these benefits.
The Science
During the year of 2009, researchers at the University of Exeter revealed that nitrate-rich beetroot juice helped increase endurance in male cyclists. The subjects could perform 16% longer during the days they were given 500ml of organic beetroot juice per day for six days before the testing was done. These cyclists also had a lower blood pressure at rest.
The European Journal (Applied Physiology) recently published a study revealing that beetroot juice could save a few seconds off one’s race time. Male runners were given beetroot juice the day prior to performing running tests and in the morning of the race. Similarly, another group was given a nitrate-free drink. The runners who took the beetroot juice could run 4.2% further in time-restricted sprint trials compared to those who took a nitrate-free drink.
How To Use The Power Of Beetroot?
Beetroots are dosed based on their nitrate content. A recent study showed that a 500ml fresh beetroot juice could do the trick for a pre-workout session. If you want an on-the-go and a more versatile solution, a beetroot extract supplement on the market can help you the same way. This article provides information on the power of beetroot.
