Amish Health Secrets May Be Tied To Their Lifestyle

Amish health secrets have only recently caught the attention of people, when a study came out that Amish children living in a community in Indiana had the lowest incidence of allergies, even lower compared to their popular European counterparts who used to hold the distinction.

Amish health secrets have to do with their lifestyle

In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers conducted a study on a similar group of people called the Hutterites that shared the same ancestral origins as the Amish, but were not found to have the same health disposition as the Amish.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where they were looking for a suitable comparison for the Amish and they found the Hutterites and began to study their differences and unique health traits.

Farming practice?

Initial findings of the tests point to the farming practices of both the Amish and Hutterites, but the distinction came with the Amish having small farms and their livestock dwelling and barns were located right beside their homes while the Hutterites separated their dwellings far from their farms.

The proximity of the Amish’s farms with their shelter exposes them to more microbes into their homes which the researchers found that microbe population in Amish homes were six times more than those of the Hutterites.

Allergies and asthma

During the study, the researchers found that 5% of Amish children has asthma, while the Hutterites had 21%. The immune system of Amish children also more enhanced compared to the Hutterites.

The Hutterite children had more white blood cells called eosinophils which are linked to allergies, while the Amish had more of the type called neutrophils, which are known to repel microbes in the bloodstream.

The Amish children were also more exposed to livestock and cattle compared to the Hutterites, which may have served to strengthen their immune systems by creating more antibodies against a number of disease –causing microbes.

What’s more, the gene profile of the Amish children showed different gene expressions that signals restraint instead of aggression, compared to the Hutterite children.

Researchers agree that even while the tests only covered 30 participants from each community, they hope to further press on with more tests to see a more defined picture of their immunology and outlook in life.

High Doses Of Fish Oil May Be Good For Heart Attack Survivors

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Doses of fish oil tested among recovering heart attack patients were found to have significantly improved heart health and showed reduced signs of scarring only after six months of taking fish oil supplement.

Doses of fish oil of premium quality proves to be heart-healthy

This, after researchers from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston reveals that patients recovering from heart attacks and prescribed to take a higher dosage of fish oil supplements significantly improved their conditions as well as showing signs of very good progress in their heart health.

Although researchers are yet to determine the actual amounts of omega-3 fatty acids from the supplements administered were responsible for it, but they are positive of the actual benefits that it brought the patients.

The hospital’s director of cardiac magnetic resonance and the senior author of the study Dr. Raymond Kwong, says that they used periodic magnetic resonance imaging scans of the patients to monitor their progress and found that the results were very encouraging.

“What we need to study going forward is whether higher doses of omega-3 can reduce mortality rates. Can we do better than produce 6 percent heart improvement and 6 percent less scarring?” Kwong points out.

Hundreds of recovering patients showed positive results

The study involved some 360 heart attack survivors whose progress were monitored and tracked within six months. Half of the participants were prescribed daily doses of 4 grams of omega-3 supplements, while the other half were given placebo pills.

A patient is typically prescribed about 1 to 2 grams of Omega-3 daily, especially for those with high levels of triglycerides.

Those patients who were given the higher doses showed no less than 6% improvement in their heart function and improved scarred tissues.

Kwong said that their stud was made possible with updated technologies in MRI scanning, where it was possible for them to get a close and clearer images of the patients’ hearts, adding that they hope to do more tests to get them closer and more specific answers to the effects of Omega-3 for the heart.

More premium quality Omega- 3 fatty acids may be needed

Although there are a lot of brands in the market that provide omega-3 fatty acids, it is always important to know the quality and amounts it contains in dietary supplements.

The American Medical Association points out that among the most significant sources of good quality omega-3 fatty acids in nature are halibut, salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines and herring.

Distracted Driving Addiction Can Be Deadly

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Distracted driving addiction according to experts may soon turn out to be a public health issue with the growing number of incidents related to driver distraction on the road caused linked to smartphone or electronic gadget usage.

Distracted driving addiction is no joke

While people believe that talking on the phone, texting or checking on social media while driving is dangerous, many if not most people still do it.

It definitely addictive condition that results to distracted driving which many smartphone users may deny doing, but that scientists prove to be triggered by a hormone in the brain that strongly urges you to do so.

This is a result of the addictive nature of smartphones that causes the brain to instinctively react to a notification whether it is a text message or an update on Facebook or Twitter, according to David Greenfield, founder of the Center for Internet Technology and Addiction.

“The dopamine reward centers are the same centers that have to do with pleasure from eating, pleasure from sex and procreation, pleasure from drugs and alcohol,” Greenfield said. “This reward circuitry is as old as time and if we didn’t have it, we probably wouldn’t exist as a species.”

Greenfield said that smartphones affect one’s brain often without even knowing or aware of it. When someone hears a ping or a ring on the phone, dopamine is released that triggers an arousal and it expects to be rewarded.

Greenfield says that this is how the brain’s circuitry is wired to trigger that reward response and when dopamine levels are high, the brain’s reward center shuts down the prefrontal cortex of the brain which is responsible for our reasoning and judgment.

“The parts of the brain that say, ‘OK, how important is this text? Is this text worth dying for? Is this text worth killing somebody else for?’ ” says Greenfield. “The answer, of course, logically, would be ‘no,’ but if you have less access to that part of your brain when you’re in this state, which seems to be the case, then you’re not really using your judgment.”

Undeniable data

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that traffic deaths in 2015 went up by 7.7 percent in the United States, many of those cases involved were due to distracted driving.

There are approximately 660,000 drivers all over America using their cellphones or manipulating a device while driving, at any given time. This number has remained steady since 2010.

A lot of traffic accidents involving distracted driving often result from a split second glance into a smartphone or gadget display that causes one to lose focus on the road and could result to an accident.

Genes Responsible For Depression Found

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Genes responsible for depression were identified by scientists and could be declared a modern breakthrough in the study of clinical depression and in the search for treatment or therapy of this mental illness.

Genes responsible for depression found

Researchers from Pfizer pharmaceuticals found 17 specific gene types from the genomes of no less than 450,000 people, who showed a high risk of developing depression and how the genes may be responsible for it.

The study examined data consolidated by a consumer genetic testing company and out of 300,000 participants, there were 75,607 persons who reported having been treated for clinical depression.

Their DNA was then collected and compared to their healthy counterparts using a programmed algorithm to filter the search data, which then accurately pointed out the genetic variations and differences that appeared among those who were suffering from depression.

Depression is a disease

Study lead author Roy Perlis clarified that although the genes do not signify a direct link that would cause depression, but it does provide compelling evidence for researchers to understand better how depression occurs. Perlis believes that depression is a disease rather than just a mood or behavioural condition.

“Depression is about biology and I think that will be helpful for some people in reducing stigma and changing how we think about depression,” says Perlis.

More in-depth study needed

Although some experts agree that the number of subjects involved in the study were fairly significant to come up with conclusive data, they believe that more in-depth study is required to validate these findings.

They also expressed apprehension over the data gathered from a consumer-based testing company where the data are mostly self-reported and may not be specifically guided by specialists in providing their answers to questions.

Another basis is that some people with severe depression may not have received a proper diagnosis and may base their premise on common beliefs.

Depression and anxiety affects millions in US

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that an estimated 40 million adults in the United States are affected by depression and anxiety disorders especially those from the age bracket of 18 and older. Anxiety and depression are also the most common mental illness in the US.

Although depression and anxiety disorders are different from the other, people suffering from depression experience symptoms similar with those having anxiety disorders namely, irritability, nervousness, insomnia and lack of focus.

The difference between the two are primarily behavioural and emotional symptoms.

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Moves for your butt often make the most out of bodyweight and lifting routines that focus attention towards the glutes, in order to provide it with proper butt-shaping moves that would ensure the best form you can have for your butt.

Moves For Your Butt Means To Move Your Butt

Truth be told that the only way to blast your butt is to move it. Exercise and lifting routines that engage the glutes are the best routines that you can use to maximize your goals.

Remember, having well-shaped glutes is a sign of good muscle conditioning, but are you aware that a less-appealing butt is a sign of poor exercise activities? Here are ways to spark up inactive glutes.

The glutes is one of the most noticeable body part that gets a lot of attention, both in the aspects of fitness and aesthetics. You may not be aware but your buttocks is a muscle group that needs to be worked out to get its fuller shape and firmer build.

Butt Exercises Also Increase Performance

It may sound surprising, but indeed, butt exercises can also enhance athletic performance, especially when you are into track and field events like running and jumping events.

The major muscle groups that make up the butt – the gluteus maximus, medius and minimus – are key players that help increase strength for competition.

Basic Booty-shaping Mechanics

Work your glutes from both the contracted and stretched positions, Reason being that your glutes and hamstrings are maximizing their full range of motion.

Varied pull-through hinge mechanics, as this applies horizontal force and resistance to allow the glutes with significant tension for both horizontal and vertical resistance.

Improve spinal alignment and posture. This helps provide balance and targeting the right glute and hamstring muscles accordingly.

Maximize the use of squat exercises. from Bulgarian squats, split squat and weighted lunges, it will help provide both resistance and tension for the glutes

Butt-shaping Toning Exercises

Here are some of the most common yet effective butt-shaping workouts you can use to incorporate to your training.

Hip Drive

Keeping your legs together, sit down you your knees and make sure both feet. As you engage the glutes as you lift your buttocks and rise up to a kneeling position, then slowly lower down while keeping glutes engaged.

Bottom’s Up Lunge

Assume a hip drive position to start, then begin to start by moving your left foot forward as our right foot stays in a kneeling position. Engage the glutes to stand as you pull the left heel, then continue on with engaging the hamstrings and the glutes as you lift.

Single Leg Glute Bridge

Lie down on your back with the knees bent with the soles of the feet on the floor. Start extending one leg and as you exhale, engage your glutes and push your hips up as high as you can. Hold for one second then lower down slowly to the starting position. Repeat the process with the other leg.

Hydrants With Leg Extension

Get down on all fours and spread the knees hip-width apart.  Maintain a 90 degree angle with the left knee, then lift the right leg by extending it to the right side. Hold for two seconds then slowly return back to the starting position. Do several reps and perform the same process with the other leg.

Perfect Squat

Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Extend arms forward. Push the hips back and sit down like sitting on an invisible chair, then stand up while squeezing the glutes.

Squat To Double Pulse Lunge

Grab hold of 10 to 15 lb weights, stand with feet apart shoulder level. Lower the hips until they are parallel to the floor. Push with the heels and return to standing position. Step with the left foot back and come into a lunge. Hold for 2 seconds and pulse twice.

Cross Lunge To Squat

Using the same weights, start by standing with the right leg crossed behind the left, lower to a curtsy with the ball of the left foot. Push with the left heel to stand then drop to a squat.

Pelvic Thrust

Lie on the floor face up and place feet shoulder width apart on a bench placing both hands on the hips. Push the pelvis up with the heels and hold at the top for 2 seconds. Go down through a 5 to 10 count movement while stopping an inch above the floor.
