Safety First! 4 Safety Products for Your Active Lifestyle

urban sports, healthy couple jogging in the city at early morning in night

An active lifestyle carries with it a certain amount of risk. Running trails? You could easily trip on a rock and twist an ankle. Playing a little beach volleyball? You wouldn’t be the first to crash into a teammate while diving for a ball. Lifting weights? Oh, the risk factors — they are numerous. But maintaining an active lifestyle is more than worth the risk, not only because sitting around all day is even riskier, but also because of the way living an active lifestyle makes you feel. Strong. Proud. Confident. Exhilarated. Happy. And if you’re doing what you can to …

Quick Garlic Lime Marinated Pork Chops

Quick Garlic Lime Marinated Pork Chops

These garlic lime pork chops are so EASY to make, and they only take 10 minutes to cook. I usually make them in my broiler but they are also great on the grill, they come out juicy and SO flavorful!

You can let them marinate as little as 15 minutes or as long as overnight.

These garlic lime pork chops are so EASY to make, and they only take 10 minutes to cook. I usually make them in my broiler but they are also great on the grill, they come out juicy and SO flavorful!

Some of you may recognize this recipe, I first posted it back in 2009 and re-shot it as it was in desperate need of a photo makeover. I served this with cilantro lime rice on the side using brown rice instead of white but this would also be great with a big salad. Enjoy!

You have probably heard of protein shakes almost every time you go to the gym and you hear people saying what good ones to take and how much do you need, understanding the protein shake anatomy can help you understand it better.

But do you know how it works and what it can do for your body? Surely it would be best if you are aware of this, so that the next time you plan your workouts and meals, you’ll have a better grasp of what to do for optimum results.

Almost everyone who is serious about working out for mass building or physical fitness knows that protein is important for the development and health of your muscles, especially when you start feeling that your workouts are taking too long to generate the results that you have been anticipating.

But worry no more, because you can now feel confident after getting a boost of protein supplements that can help you maximize the effects of your regular workouts.

There are in fact, a lot of benefits that you can get out of protein drinks or shakes, but among the most common ones are;

They are formulated to contain choice carbohydrate ingredients to enhance rebuilding of muscle glycogen stores that are essential for sustaining muscle recovery and building muscle mass.

They are formulated with branched-chain amino acids that are essential for synthesizing proteins that promote recovery of muscle micro tears resulting from workouts or exercises.

They possess highly-absorbable and rapid-digesting proteins like whey to rebuild muscle mass and tissues.

The science behind muscle or mass building is anchored on the process that the muscles produce micro damage once it is subjected to stress like stretching, lengthening or shortening that occurs during workouts or exercises.

Protein synthesis works to produce muscle proteins that aids in the recovery of these damages and works to increase mass as a natural process of strengthening the muscle fiber.

Protein shakes provide the dietary source of these proteins to ensure that the need of the muscles for protein supplementation for health and growth is achieved and maximized.

So the next time you plan your workouts, you can count on your protein shakes to help provide that boost in your muscle recovery and health.

Bioplastics May Be The Answer To Reduce Waste

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Aside from the fact that conventional plastic packaging adds up to thousands of tons of unwanted waste particularly on food products, the practice of discarding expired uneaten food sold in stores magnifies this concern.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported that no less than 35% of all food products on Earth are wasted, mostly prevalent in households and retail stores and not just poses problems on ethical principles or economics, but has a serious implication on the environment as well that largely contributes to climate change and global warming.

However, in reports published in the journal Science Daily, campaigns into further protecting the environment is gaining good headway into addressing this concern with the development of bioplastics by Scandinavian research group SINTEF – a form of biodegradable  plastic-like packaging material made from organic materials and is believed to not just prolong shelf-life of store-bought food but also accurately tells if the food inside is no longer fit for consumption.

Age Larsen, senior researcher for SINTEF, demonstrated the first bioplastic package material made from bio-PET or bio polyethylene terephthalate and PLA or polyactic acid.

Larsen pointed out that this “green plastic” is made of biopolymers that were added with nanoparticle components made up of improved food preservation properties designed to protect the contents from factors that affect spoilage to extend shelf-life by using reinforced oxygen barriers.

Unlike traditional plastic packaging material, this new bioplastic considerably reduces the carbon footprint as it accurately addresses the wanton disposal of food and packing wastes.

SINTEF is also currently in collaboration with Portuguese-based company Logoplaste also recently developed a blow-moulded bottle made from a strikingly similar bioplastic properties.

Greek company Argo, in a similar project collaboration, is working with SINTEF in developing a seafood pot to hold crabs and prawns that covered in an exterior coating that is oxygen-proof.

Larsen added that these ‘green’ plastic materials said their food storage indicator technology were developed with nano-sensors that are highly sensitive to minute changes that allow the packaging to change color when the indicator-substances are released.

Still, Larsen pointed out that there will always be issues on the matter of these ‘sensors’ being integrated with food material and said that it is up to the manufacturer to decide how they could use the product or how it would get approval from health authorities.

What’s Good For The Heart Is Good For The Mind

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Brain health is as important as heart and body health, which people think could be a complicated process thinking that maybe ways and methods to keep it healthy vary in different ways.

Studies, however, have recently revealed that as you continue to aim in keeping your heart healthy, you may also unsuspectingly be taking care of your brain as well- psychologically, physically and nutritionally.

In a recently published study by the Journal of the American Heart Association, a team from the Northern Manhattan Study which is an undertaking that focuses on risk factors for stroke attack among the dominant race like white, blacks and Hispanics in the Washington Heights of New York City, pointed out that most of the healthy activities focused on keeping the heart healthy are also replicated in the brain.

The team headed by University of Miami epidemiologist Hannah Gardener said that their study wanted to determine how people aged between 60 to 70 would fare on repeated memory tests and mental acuity for a period of six years and identify any differences a heart-focused healthy lifestyle would have its effects on the brain aside from measures to prevent stroke attacks.

The initial stage of the research involved more than 1,000 volunteers who had their cardiovascular condition evaluated using standard measurements of Life’s Simple 7 developed by the American Heart Association.

Among the 7 key factors of the testing model were known to boost the health of the heart and blood vessels, as well as maintaining good nutrition and a normal body weight, eliminate smoking, regular exercise and to keep blood sugar, cholesterol and pressure levels within the healthy range.

To measure the mental aspect of the study, Gardener and her team conducted a variety of tests on judgment, memory, planning ability, mental alertness and several other problem solving assessments.

“The results were striking among all demographic groups,” Gardener said, pointing out that those who garnered high scores on cardiovascular health are the same ones who scored better on the mental assessments.

A follow-up assessment conducted several years later on mental acuity also revealed that the progressive benefits on the brain were sustained by the healthy-heart model espoused by the Life’s Simple 7 approach as they also scored higher on the testing model.

The results speak for itself, keeping the heart and body healthy does in fact benefit the brain as well, the researchers added.

Aspirin May Hold The Promise To Treat Some Cancer, Studies Show

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Studies into the uses of aspirin have taken another breakthrough into the vast potential of aspirin and just recently, scientists have found clues that see it having a role in the treatment and prevention of cancer.

This, after findings of a study published very recently in Cell Metabolism reveal the first comprehensive lipidomic profile of platelets in response to stimuli and aspirin

The research team headed by scientists from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom in collaboration with the University of Colorado and the University of Alabama Birminghan, were able to differentiate the profile of more than 5600 lipid tissues, simply known as fat, and how these fats react to aspirin.

The study’s lead author Dr. Valerie O’Donnell from the Division of Infection and Immunity, pointed out the possibility of aspirin playing a role in the treatment and prevention of cancer and by understanding the way people respond to aspirin will scientists be able to tell who and how they can benefit from it.

“The research shows a link between energy metabolism and inflammation, as well as providing early insight into the fundamentals of precision medicine regarding the variation of the lipidome among individuals,” said Dr. Victor Darley – Usmar, co-author of the study and Endowed Professor of Mitochondrial Medicine and Pathology at UAB.

Lipids, according to the researchers, play crucial structural roles by acting as nutrients and controlling a dynamic range of pathophysiological and physiological occurrences in cells.

The variations in the changes of lipid families is still undetermined by science, however, this study plays a promising hope to be able to understand the cellular changes and effects for it to be better understood and allow researchers to someday develop treatments or prevention for diseases like cancer and other degenerative conditions.

With the integration of aspirin into the picture both as an effective cardio protector and cancer-fighting potential, researchers may be able to understand how the platelets regulate lipid cells.

It will just be a matter of time before science would be able to determine the role that aspirin plays in the treatment of health conditions as well as the prevention of some debilitating diseases like cancer and other degenerative illnesses.
