It appears that a new research has some interesting findings about the age capacity of humans and how long can humans live. There’s now a definite number.

The record-holder for the longest living human was Jeanne Calment. She died when she was 122, on August 4, 1997.

However, the study now says that we’ve possibly reached our maximum capacity. Dr. Vijg shares his ideas about the results. It seems that humans are only capable of living until the age of 115.

What’s the Longest Humans Can Live? 115 Years, New Study Says

Jan Vijg doubts we will see the likes of her again. True, people have been living to greater ages over the past few decades. But now, he says, we have reached the upper limit of human longevity. Read more…

Business Insider says that ever since, humans attempted to stop aging. They have tried numerous ways to prolong their lives. There have been improvements in terms of technology in the form of vaccinations and antibiotics and so on. However, these findings may be nature’s way of limiting the human capacity.

Some researchers think there’s a limit to how long humans can live

For thousands of years, throughout recorded history, people have searched for a way to live longer.

And we’ve made remarkable strides, especially in the past century and a half or so. But we may now be butting up against a natural limit to the human lifespan, according to an analysis published October 5 in Nature. Read more…

The Detroit Free Press reports that in the same study, the researchers examined the data involving mortality rates globally. They discovered that there have been improvements in reducing deaths for children, women, and elderly. However, they noted that it was slower for those who are aged 100 years old and above.

There were experts who mentioned that the study did not consider the advances in health as well as other techniques that were made to promote the extension of life. The aim is to develop treatments that can slow the aging process and help them become healthier.

How long can humans live? New study suggests there’s a limit

Life expectancies in many countries have risen dramatically because of improvements in medical care and sanitation in the last century. The maximum age of death has also increased, leading some to believe that there’s no boundary to how long people can live. Read more…

One study shows results that elderly women who consume coffee regularly lower their risk of getting dementia. Well, this is the case if you consume about three regular cups of coffee. You can get a similar amount from five cups of black tea or eight cans of Coke.

IFLScience says there are other studies that support the benefits especially those that were conducted on mice – it helped them from developing Alzheimer’s. For humans though, not enough research has been done concerning the neuroprotective properties of caffeine

Caffeine May Protect Older Women From Dementia

Reporting their work in the Journals of Gerontology Series A, the study authors explain how they recruited just under 6,500 postmenopausal women aged 65 and older to complete a questionnaire regarding the amount of caffeine-containing drinks – such as coffee, tea, and cola – they consume each day. Read more…

Psychcentral reports that Ira Driscoll, Ph.D., the study’s lead author says that caffeine has protective factors against cognitive problems. It is something that is easily incorporated into the individual’s diet with only few contraindications.

The findings came from Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study participants. They checked the consumption intake, frequency and serving size with questions about coffee, tea, and cola beverages.

Caffeine May Protect Women from Dementia

Driscoll and her research colleagues used data from 6,467 community-dwelling, postmenopausal women aged 65 and older who reported some level of caffeine consumption. Read more…

Sputnik News states that the research team monitored the participants. They reported their intake for ten years. The results were astounding. Those who took at least 261 milligrams of caffeine were less likely to develop the condition. Their risk dropped by 36 percent.

This is a significant improvement as caffeine and dementia has been examined so many times.

Drinking to Remember: Your Coffee Habit May Protect Against Dementia

Coffee drinkers, take comfort: your beverage of choice may be helping your brain, according to evidence from a new study in the Journals of Gerontology…

Results were adjusted to take into account factors like hormone therapy, age, race, education, body mass index, sleep quality, depression, hypertension, prior cardiovascular disease, diabetes, smoking and alcohol consumption. Read more…

The Ultimate Race Day Playlist

run-playlist-909

If you’ve ever run a race, you know how important those moments are before the starting gun goes off. You gotta warm up, make sure your bladder (and other — ahem — systems) are good and empty, double-knot your laces, and — maybe most importantly — get in the focused mindset that you are about to do the dang thing and have a blast while doing it. And one of our fave ways to get in that mindset is by having the perfect race songs at the ready. Which is exactly why we’ve put our collective noggins together to create this …

How To Gain Muscle Fast With Proteins And Carbs

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

To how to gain muscle fast you need to understand the basic of muscle development, as well as the mechanics of mass growth, health and recovery

How to gain muscle fast with proteins and carbohydrates

Proteins play a key role in building and maintaining a healthy body. Having protein for every meal is essential to keeping it the body in tip top shape, even helps protect from diseases.

But carbohydrates also play a key role in muscle development, which is often neglected and unfortunately earned a negative reputation and associated more with weight gain rather than muscle building.

In fact, carbohydrates play a key role in muscle development, as long as you know which ones are necessary and the ones to avoid.

What are proteins?

You may have heard of protein and what role it plays in our daily lives, but are you aware about how protein works in the body, where it is sourced and how it makes up the human body?

Protein takes a critical and essential role in maintaining and building a healthy body, growing muscle mass and bones. Two of the most common protein products in the body are the hair and fingernails.

The proteins that we put into our bodies are the dietary proteins that we source from food and most of the beneficial proteins that our bodies need are those from vegetables and meats that we consume.

The building blocks of protein are called amino acids and considered as necessary nutrients present in every cell and are precursors to nucleic acids, hormones, co-enzymes, immune response, repair and other molecules essential for life.

Proteins comprise the outer membrane of all cells in the body and act to strengthen all the organ and tissue structures in the body.

It also helps maintain the body’s immune system by strengthening the immune response as a major component of antibodies that destroy harmful bacteria or viruses in the body. People who have less proteins in their bodies are often more susceptible to sickness and diseases, as well as having difficulty recovering from illnesses compared to people who have a high protein diet.

How about carbohydrates?

The type of carbohydrates that you eat is crucial to muscle development and the key is knowing what to eat and how much you need to consume.

To aid muscle development, you need to have carbohydrates in your diet. Just as long as you eat the right types and the right mounts, you can hasten muscle growth and build big muscles fast.

Eat complex carbohydrates. The ones that you needs are those found in rice, sweet potatoes, whole grain cereal and oatmeal. It should make up the bulk of your daily calorie intake to form muscle glycogen and fuel your body as you train.

Take carbohydrates immediately after training. Your blood sugar drops when you train which emphasizes the need for your body to take on carbohydrates to provide your body the insulin it needs to normalize blood sugar levels.

Eat little amounts of carbohydrates often. Just maintaining little portions of carbs often keeps your insulin levels in check to regulate your blood sugar levels. Eating too much in one sitting may only cause you to store more fat, so make sure to just have the right amounts.

Choose high fiber carbs. Fiber helps build muscle as it makes the muscle tissue absorb amino acids faster.

Avoid sugar. These include fruits, which contain fructose which is a simple sugar that converts to glycogen. However, the muscles can only have so much and the excess glycogen just gets converted to fat and stored in the body.

Eat balanced meals. Combine your carbs and proteins together during meals to minimize carbs getting stored as fat. Since protein takes a while to process in the body, it increases metabolism, thus allow the carbs to transport nutrients from protein to the muscle cells.

Molecular Biologist’s Promising Results: What Sugar Does To The Brain

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Let’s take Monica Dus’ research as an example. She is a molecular biologist at the University of Michigan, and she’s looking into how sugar may possibly affect the brain which normally results into overeating and obesity.

She wants to know why there are people who cannot control themselves. Why is it that you’re now getting that second slice of apple pie? What is so special about that second cupcake? Dus wants to find out the reasons why people do these things. She wants to gain a better understanding about the effects of sugar

The Interest

Her interest in this research was sparked because of the incident involving her two dogs. Cupcake and Sprinkles got hold of a bag of treats and they couldn’t stop eating. Dus says, “I couldn’t believe that these two tiny, 15-pound animals had huge bellies for three days and they couldn’t stop themselves from eating.”

The Research

She turned to flies and studied them with the hopes of solving the mystery how the brain takes control of the eating habits. The scientist and her lab have a hypothesis. A high diet sugar can cause a definitive change in the brain. The possible result: the brain no longer knows the amount of calories the body is ingesting. There might be molecular changes and this leads to overeating and obesity.

Dus says, “Perhaps it has nothing to do with will, and a lot to do with biochemistry.” She is hopeful that she can find a connection between a high diet sugar and obesity.

The Scientist

The scientist is currently getting attention. She got a grant from the National Institutes of Health for getting the New Innovator award. She received a total of $1.5 million. This is a new grant aimed which has a mission to support “exceptionally creative, early-career investigators who propose innovative, high-impact projects.”

Not only that but she’s also a scholar from the Rita Allen Foundation. This is a program that helps out young scientists to “establish labs and pursue research directions with above-average risk and promise.”

NPR.com interviewed Dus and her colleagues at the University of Michigan. Christina May was helping the research by investigating the individual cells in a fruit fly’s brain.

“I stimulated the fly mouth with sugar, and I recorded from this part of the brain,” May says. There are two groups of flies: the ones on a high-sugar diet and those who ate normally.

The ones that are on the high-sugar diet ended up consuming a lot of calories compared to the group of flies that ate normally. This means that if you consistently have a high sugar content meal, it makes you eat even more.

The Possible Results

Monica Dus is about to prepare her initial results and they’re promising. If she can obtain results that prove there are indeed changes in the brain that may lead to obesity, then it can surely change the methods we have in managing the condition.

Overexposure To The Sun: New Sensor Alerts Users

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

When we get out of our houses or apartments, it’s there. When we commute to work, it’s still there. Even when we’re just strolling around the park, the sun’s just there.

Exposure

The benefits that we get when we get a decent amount of exposure cannot be ignored.  However, we face a greater risk of skin cancer if we’re exposed for a longer period of time according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC). How can we know if we’re getting the right amount of sunlight?

It’s good to know that scientists invented a prototype that suggests if the user needs more or less exposure to the sun. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering released a press statement about this new invention as reported in medicaldaily.com

Andrea M Armani, Associate Professor, and doctoral candidate Michele E. Lee, both of USC wrote the material that describes the sensor. It was published in ACS Sensors.

Armani said in a video, “My lab developed a UV responsive material that actually changes colours when it’s exposed to UV, so that when someone’s exposed to UV they are able to tell how long they’ve been in the sun.”

Sensor Prototype

The sensor is 0.5 by 0.5 millimeter in size, water proof, sunscreen proof, and flexible. The good thing about this is that it can operate without the need of a power source. This is comparable to a band-aid: you can wear it and then dispose of it.

It can change colours based on the suggested daily dose of Vitamin D by the World Health Organization. Before being exposed to sunlight, the colour of the patch should be transparent. If the user has had too much sunlight, the patch changes to an orange colour.

There are three layers that form the sensor: a transparent polymer backing forms the base, an active layer based on an o-nitrobenzyl reactive group, and a tertiary polymer top. These are the main components of the sensors patented by Armani and Lee. The sensors only have a maximum of five weeks shelf-life.
